Official synopsis

Cairo, January 25, 2013: a series of sexual assault takes place on Tahrir Square on the day of the second anniversary of the revolution. In response, a massive outpouring of enraged women fill the streets and Samaher Alqadi joins them. She brings her camera to protect herself in the battle and to document the protests of a growing Women’s Rebellion, not knowing where the story will lead her.

The programmer’s eye

In this documentary on a little-known aspect of recent History, the director collects words and builds her journey to motherhood. The strength of “As I Want” lies in the way it mixes personal questioning and an investigation on the causes of widespread female submission. A real contraband film, urgent and burning, as well as an awareness tool that makes you want to act. Rare cinema. — Natacha Seweryn
