Official synopsis

Gallimard, a modest employee of the Embassy of France in Beijing, falls in love with the diva Song Liling, whose interpretation of "Madame Butterfly" upsets him. He does not know that it is a man. Caught in this passion, he does not suspect for a moment that is manipulated for political purposes from the beginning.

Cronenberg tackles with a historical drama and his usual obsessions: the confusion of genres and senses, the fear of the flesh. Jeremy Irons is poignant, blinded and sickened by love. Tragic, ever pathetic....
