Official synopsis

At daybreak I was surprised by a big BANG and could not fall asleep. In Bogota, through the mountains, in the tunnel, by the river. A bang.

The programmer’s eye

Jessica's insomnia seems to immerse her in the permanence of a transient state, in an "almost dozing off" state that isn't yet conducive to dreaming but which makes her hallucinate reality. “Memoria” is the transmission of this feeling, a fleece essay on memory, a communicative dreamy film on the love of slow life, a generous work that invites us to curl up in it. Weerasethakul’s first adventure outside Thailand produces an unthinkable synthesis between his repertoire of beliefs and Colombian literature, stimulating the ghosts of Bogota. — Pierre Guidez

Biography and Filmography

Born in Bangkok and raised in Khon Kaen in Northeast Thailand, Apichatpong Weerasethakul is recognized as one of the most original voices in contemporary cinema. His seven feature films, short films, installations and his recent live performance have earned him wide international recognition and numerous awards, including the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2010 with “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives”. Lyrical and often fascinating and mysterious, his cinematographic works are non-linear, deal with memory, and subtly invoke personal politics and social issues. Working independently from the Thai film industry, he’s dedicated to promoting experimental and independent cinema through his company Kick the Machine Films, which also produces all of his films. He is currently preparing a performance which will be presented in San Francisco. “Memoria” is his first feature film shot outside Thailand and with an international cast.
