Official synopsis

In Japan, three adults fall under the spell of Rinko, a high school girl from the video game Love Plus. This virtual idyll leads them to the old seaside city of Atami for a whole weekend. They cross the road of two teenagers - Kentaro and Kyoko - who came to spend their first romantic weekend together. But Kentaro is also attracted to Rinko. At first jealous, Kyoko ends up taking an interest in this virtual rival who seems to have contaminated the hearts of all the men of the country.

The programmer’s eye

With "Perfect Boyfriend", Kaori Kinoshita and Alain Della Negra continue their exploration of human relationships through digital practices, virtual identities and pop culture. Following in the footsteps of users of LovePlus, a flirting game, and young performers called "idols", they question the gender dynamics at work in Japanese society in the field of sexuality. Behind the blurred narrative paths, one witnesses the frightening difficulty of meeting someone for these people the filmmakers always look at with a gentle and respectful gaze.

Biography and Filmography

Kaori Kinoshita was born in Tokyo in 1970. She studied sculpture there before coming to France in 1997 to study art video at the Beaux-Arts in Dijon, and then joined the Fresnoy  Contemporary Art Studio. She met Alain Della Negra, born in France in 1975, after his studies at the Beaux Arts in Strasbourg. For the past fifteen years, they have been living and working together in Paris. They focus on the relationship between personal identity and avatars: virtual characters, masks and disguises, community events... They started with short documentaries before directing the feature documentary “The Cat, the Reverend and the Slave” in 2009, in which they portray real life Americans and their Second Life avatars in their everyday lives. In 2016, they shot their second feature film “Bonheur Académie (Happiness Academy)”, in Croatia; they filmed Raelians (members of the UFO religion Raelism) alongside professional actors, during their University of Happiness. In 2019, they directed “Tsuma Musume Haha”, a short documentary exploring a non-reciprocal love story between human and non-human in Japan. They just completed their third feature film “Perfect Boyfriend” (also shot in Japan) about the phenomenon of dating simulation games. They also regularly collaborate with art centers such as the Centre Pompidou, the Palais de Tokyo (Paris) and the Haifa Museum of Art.
