Portrait of Jason a été tourné une nuit de décembre 1966 dans la chambre qu’occupe alors Shirley Clarke au mythique Chelsea Hotel à New York. Seul face à la caméra, Jason se met en scène, interprète les personnages croisés lors d’une vie qu’il s’est partiellement inventé depuis son enfance et se raconte, une bouteille de scotch et une cigarette à la main.

Oeuvre phare du cinéma expérimental des années soixante, c’est le portrait d’une intimité, d’un homme noir, homosexuel, dont la vie fut une épopée à travers les États-Unis, allant d’homme de maison à prostitué, un « hustler » dont le rêve est de créer un show à son image. Ce film est comme monté en direct par le regard de Shirley Clarke et mené par les interventions abusives de Carl Lee. Si c'est une plongée crue dans l’univers du flamboyant Jason Holliday, le recul historique permet d'amorcer une réflexion sur la relation problématique du rapport filmeur/filmé, en lien avec la présentation du travail critique de Deborah Joyce-Holman, montré au CAPC. - Natacha Seweryn -
