Official synopsis

“Bottled Songs” is an ongoing media project depicting strategies aiming at making sense of online terrorist propaganda. Filmmakers and media researchers Chloé Galibert-Laîné and Kevin B. Lee compose letters addressed to each other, narrating their encounters through videos originating from the terrorist group ISIS. They use a desktop documentary approach to trace and record their investigations directly on their computers.

The programmer’s eye

The cinema of Chloé Galibert-Laîné and Kevin B. Lee has the immense virtue of infusing sensitive elements into theoretical material, which is made possible thanks to the intimacy offered by desktop films. In the awareness of the fragmentation and expansion of our contemporary geographies, a first shock occurs with regard to “Bottled Songs”, which those bottles that are thrown into the digital ocean while waiting to be picked up, listened to and interpreted. But the most lasting transplant is found in the vertigo of this relentless investigation into Daesh propaganda, which reveals the porosity between what’s virtual and real. — Pierre Guidez
